Good food in South Bay

Since moving to South Bay, one of the regular comments I hear from friends who still live in East Bay or SF is the the quality of food in South Bay is poor.   While overall, I actually agree, I also believe you can find good food just about anywhere if you look hard enough.

Here’s a quick list of some of the actually good places I’ve found in the general area.  While I do consider quality per cost (i.e. value), a restaurant has to meet a fairly high quality bar before I’m willing to actually call it
“good” rather than merely “cheap”.

Alana’s Cafe
1020 Main St  Redwood City, CA 94063

By far the best breakfast place I’ve found.  Outdoor patio seating, nice atmosphere, and good food.  I’ve only been here once (so far!), but other friends have said the experience I had was consistent with their own visits.

House of Bagels
1681 Hollenbeck Ave  Sunnyvale, CA 94087

Nice little bagel place.  Good bagels, decent coffee, and very cheap.  I went to the one in Sunnyvale, but it’s a local chain.

800 W Ahwanee Ave, Sunnyvale, CA

Food is a bit hit or miss, but the service is always good.  A good combination to get is their Santa Cruz scramble with the Apple-Walnut coffee cake.  This isn’t a place I’d take a friend from out of town, but for a nice Sunday brunch on my own, it works well.

Lunch/Lighter Fare

Dish-N-Dash (the fast food version)
736 N Mathilda Ave  Sunnyvale, CA 94085

Generally quite good middle eastern fast food.  I really like their lamb salad.  Only downside is that the quality is a bit variable.  It bounces back and forth between “good but not great” and “quite tasty”.  If you come at lunch, call ahead with your order.  There can be a long line.

Taqueria Tres (3) Potrillos
670 N Fair Oaks Ave, Sunnyvale, CA

This has become my local Mexican place.  I’d recommend avoiding the tacos, quesadillas, etc.  They’re decent, but not great.  On the other hand, the enchiladas, carne asade, and carnitas plate are all great.  The specials are generally a good choice.   I eat here pretty much weekly.  For the price, the quality is hard to beat.

DishDash (the sit-down version)
190 S Murphy Ave, Sunnyvale, CA ‎

Wonderful middle eastern fare.  A little pricy and a bit noisy at times (we had to ask to relocate to a quieter spot), but the food was wonderful.  I will definitely be going back, but will be trying to find a quieter night.

642 Ramona St  Palo Alto, CA 94301

Solidly good Caribbean fare.  Their jerked dishes are solidly decent, particularly for the price.
