What am I voting on again?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

In just about every election I’ve voted in, its been a fair struggle just to get information about the issues on the ballot. Last fall, it wasn’t ’till I actually got to the polling place that I found out about one of the offices I was voting for. And this was after spending several *hours* the night before doing research and deciding my votes!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I consider that pretty damn ridiculous. I ran across this post from the blogger at the Open House Project who talks about his experiences in the recent PA primaries and pretty much came to the same conclusion.

The Open House Project is a site devoted to transparent government. (On in other words, we the citizens should know what sh*t our leaders are up to.) The guy who runs it often has some interesting blog posts, though its somewhat hit or miss. A lot of them I read and ignore, but others really make you think.

For Sale: 1977 Chevrolet Camaro LT

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Well, I’m not selling it, but a good friend of mine is. I’ve ridden in the car and it’s in great condition. If there are any car buffs out there, you should take a look. Here’s the text of his email to me:

“Well, the time has finally come for me to sell my beloved *1977 Chevrolet Camaro LT*. It’s been an absolute dream car and I’m hoping it will find a wonderful new home.

If you know anyone who might be interested in this Super Clean, Head-Turning Classic Camaro, please refer them to my online EBay auction for details and photos.

The 10 day auction will end *Thursday May 1st at 7:00pm*. I’m more than happy to answer any questions.”

His contact information can be found on the EBay listing.

How to undo “rm -rf /”

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

One of the worst things you can do by accident on a Unix/Linux box is run the command above. (DON’T! Or I will not be responsible for the consequences.) If you are running as root - you’re not are you? - this command would delete your entire file system. That is, every file you’ve ever created would be gone.

Suffice to say, this is often considered a “Bad Thing”.

I ran across this interesting account of how to undo some of the damage described above. Note: This is really only for *serious* Linux geeks. Frankly, some of what they describe I didn’t know was possible. Then again, I’m barely a Linux user much less an admin.

As a challenge, can anyone tell me why on some Linux distributions the above command will fail part way through? No, its not a safety measure. I’ll give you a clue, where does the “rm” binary live?

Possible hate crime in Champaign?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I don’t have any details yet, but I got a facebook message from someone I know in PRIDE at UIUC indicating there had been an assault late Saturday night on Green Street. The only blog entry I can find is - shall we say - not very reliable, so I don’t know much yet. I would appreciate any information anyone might have. I will update this when I know more.

Update (4-23-08): I spoke with a knowledgeable friend who confirmed that there was a hate based attack last weekend (4/12-13). Apparently, the attacker spotted someone he thought to be gay and punched the victim knocking him out. It turns out the victim is someone I know, though not very well. He was kept overnight at the hospital then released. He is physically fine, but understandably a bit shaken up. The attacker was arrested and is now out on bail.

There is a response being organized from Friday night after Day of Silence. If you’re in Champaign, I would encourage you to go.

Article in Metroline (Volume 35, Issue 5)

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Well, I’m a little late getting this up here, but back in March I had an article published in Metroline - a gay & lesbian twice monthly news magazine. On pg 24, both the text and pictures of the article on the NHGLCC’s Dorothy Awards are mine. I was the event photographer and wrote up a quick article after the fact. The pictures didn’t print great, though they’re not too bad overall. The originals look a lot better than what made it into the magazine.
